Gasoline and diesel-powered cars, trucks and buses annually spew out 27 per cent of all the climate-changing greenhouse gases emitted in the United States. That’s about double the global average. And the 210 million cars and trucks on the road in the U.S. account for a quarter of the world’s annual consumption of petroleum fuel — a volatile commodity whose price has been rising steadily. No wonder, then, that Americans are in the market for more energy-efficient and cleaner-running cars. As VOA’s Rosanne Skirble reports, automakers are responding to consumer interest — and the urgings of the federal government — with an array of new electric-powered vehicles.
