The Circular Carbon Economy project is a joint initiative between Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy and the Global CCS Institute. The multi-year project explores options to reduce, reuse, recycle, and remove CO2 emissions from the global energy economy and global ecosystems. The goal is to provide decision makers (including policymakers, investors, and civil society) quantitative understanding of options that can accelerate global decarbonization, reduce risks, and create economic growth. Early work builds on new and existing scholarship to create opportunities and actions for a just and verdant energy transition.
In June, we shared the key findings from our new reports, “Blue Hydrogen: Production and Use,” and “Green Hydrogen in a Circular Carbon Economy: Opportunities and Limits.” The reports touch on production, transportation, and use of zero-carbon hydrogen (blue, green, and bio), how and where there are opportunities to catalytic early action and investment, and what’s needed to put the world on a useful path to maximizing the value of a critical carbon-free fuel.
The Center on Global Energy Policy and the Global CCS Institute hosted a discussion that brought together experts in technology, policy, and finance to address how hydrogen can rapidly provide commercial energy services across key sectors (power, transportation, industry, and buildings). The event featured a keynote address and a short presentation by project co-leads, Dr. S. Julio Friedmann, Senior Research Scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA, and Alex Zapantis, General Manager – Commercial, Global CCS Institute, followed by a panel discussion.
