The world as we know it is rapidly becoming more interconnected. Society as a whole has been shifting online for most of its activities. As recently as the COVID-19 pandemic, we have embraced a world where most of life’s daily activities can be performed remotely in the comforts of our homes. It has transitioned into a way of life that allows people to go outside only minimally.
With this new way of life, one would think that mobility is not exactly a top priority. This, however, is not the case. In this new interconnected world, mobility plays a significant factor in keeping it this way. People still have places to go and people to meet. Thus, mobility helps keep the interconnectedness of society.
As the population grows and the need to go outside less grows along with it, the need for different modes of transportation becomes an issue. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) aims to provide an alternative to mobility today.
Transportation before
The idea of transportation was once private vehicles and public transport. The average individual would save up and purchase their vehicle for personal use and use that to go where they needed to be. However, those that could not afford it were made to use public transport such as buses, trains, and taxis.
Nowadays, owning a private vehicle is not a feasible option for many. While the affordability of a personal vehicle is not the problem, the utility of one is. Now more than ever, many people do not need to travel outside as much. As such, they do not need to invest in a vehicle that will only see minimal use. Public transport is still an option, though that is a limited alternative.
Public transportation serves the public and not just one individual. Because of this, they follow a regular schedule and operate in a manner that works for everyone involved. It is this aspect of public transportation that limits it the most.
MaaS explained
Mobility as a Service is an emerging player in the transportation sector that can disrupt the way things are done currently. MaaS aims to make transportation more straightforward and accessible to the masses while maintaining its utility and convenience.
To put it plainly, a MaaS application would be combining multiple modes of transportation into one interface and payment channel. It would mean buses, trains, taxis, and private operators would operate on one platform. Instead of multiple ticketing, payments, and cards for each mode of transport, the payment can be made in the joint channel shared by the platform.
It provides a proper alternative to the ownership of private vehicles. It is a convenient and more cost-friendly way for mobility in this modern age. It is also more sustainable in that there will be fewer vehicles on the road and thus fewer emissions. If MaaS becomes a more prevalent and efficient alternative, fewer people will see the need to buy their own vehicles. It will also increase the accessibility of many rural areas and improve living conditions.
Key Components of MaaS
Many new alternatives and platforms have been birthed in the transportation sector under the mantle of MaaS. The problem here is that they all differ from each other a substantial amount. Definitions of MaaS tend to get lost in applying its principles, and many of its technical aspects and jargon fly over the heads of the masses. In essence, MaaS is centered around service, mobility, and integration.
MaaS applications revolve around service with transportation as its main focus. Customers’ transport needs are what is given top priority. Aside from this, mobility is the defining characteristic of these platforms and not the transportation itself. MaaS dedicates itself to the mobility of its users and not to the optimization of the transport. In simple terms, it does not offer a new form of transportation, but rather a new way for transportation to operate. Lastly, MaaS integrates transportation services into one platform to make it easy and convenient for users. This means that information, schedules, payments, and others will be located in one simple manner. It aims to be the future of mobility. With the COVID-19 pandemic dying down, the main problem for MaaS now is integration and how to make it more mainstream.
