Hoverboards are fast becoming one of most wanted items this Christmas, but due to safety fears the devices have been banned by several airlines.
According to Reuters, passengers will no longer be able to carry hoverboards in their carry on or checked baggage on flights from Delta Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines. The devices are also known self balancing scooters, or swegways.
Reports indicate that some hoverboards have caught on fire or have exploded due to overcharged lithium-ion batteries. Airlines fear that hoverboards may pose a fire risk while onboard an aircraft, Reuters reported.
In the UK, authorities found that 88% of 17,000 hoverboards examined at British entry points were unsafe and at risk of overheating, exploding or catching on fire, Reuters reported.
