Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Mercedes parent Daimler AG, told Bloomberg on Wednesday that the German automaker has held discussions with billionaire Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer about the possibility of collaborating in some capacity on a planned electric version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
“These conversations are taking place,” Zetsche told Bloomberg, adding that the “outcome is open.”
While neither company has specified exactly what such a partnership between Tesla and Mercedes on an electric van would involve, the news that talks are at least in the works is the latest in a series of signals that the two companies may be ready to renew an old relationship.
Daimler and Tesla have been collaborating for over a decade, with Musk’s electric automaker providing lithium-ion battery packs and charging technologies for a Daimler electric smart car. Daimler spent $50 million in 2009 to purchase a less than 10% interest in Tesla, which the German company eventually sold in 2014 for around $780 million.
Before Daimler divested from the company in 2014, Tesla also supplied Mercedes with the electric powertrains needed to power the electric Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class electric vehicles.
However, in an interview with a Polish newspaper in October, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche stated that Mercedes may be open to cooperating with Tesla again in the future. A month later, Musk speculated on Twitter that it might be “maybe fascinating to collaborate with Daimler/Mercedes on an electric Sprinter,” referring to the German automaker’s electric van introduced last year.
Zetsche also stated that Tesla may be interested in using Mercedes’ electric vans for its mobile service fleet, which is a unit of Tesla personnel that the company deploys to repair faults with its vehicles at customers’ homes or workplaces.
A Mercedes-Benz spokesman told CNBC Make It that the company has no additional comment on Zetsche’s comments, but that “we are often in conversation with traditional and new companies in the automotive sector to explore possible collaboration.” We work together when it makes sense.”
Mercedes sales director Britta Seeger said the EQS’s introduction coincides with a surge in demand for electric vehicles that is beyond expectations.
During a conference call, Seeger stated, “We believe by 2030, 50% of our sales will be electric vehicles” and plug-in hybrid motorcars. “What we are now seeing… is a greater demand from clients for EVs. We are even more certain that this jump will be a little faster.”
Not only cars, but other vehicles are turning electric as the whole transportation sector progressively shifts to a more sustainable manner. With that in mind, vans are the next vehicle to be targeted for electric conversion after cars.
