To sustain society’s unabated growth, cities and communities must become smart. A smart city or community employs sensors, obtains data, and makes decisions to achieve otherwise prohibitive efficiency, economic growth, quality of life, and equity. In this webinar, it will be shown that fiber optic sensing is a paradigm shift in sensing for smart cities and communities. In fiber optic sensing, fiber optics are transformed into multitudes of inherently synchronized sensors that require no power, communication, are electromagnetically immune, withstand extreme environments, and preserve privacy. In addition, the ubiquity of fiber optics, associated cables and conduit can be naturally exploited at all granularities of cities and communities’ existing and burgeoning telecom infrastructure. Applications in surface transportation, resilience, public safety, and environmental and social governance will be discussed.
Presented by FOSA Smart Cities Committee Chairman Dr. Giovanni Milione. Dr. Milione is a Senior Researcher in the Optical Networking and Sensing Department at NEC Laboratories America, Inc. His research comprises 100+ publications and patents in fiber optic sensing, fiber optic communication, and machine learning-based artificial intelligence.
