Projects in the industrial and freight corridors

The government announced the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) for FY 2019-25, which includes projects to build, repair, enhance, and expand roads, housing, urban development, railways, conventional power, renewable energy, and irrigation networks. Highways and railways will be the focus of key programmes.

For example, the Industrial Corridor Projects, which are part of the National Industrial Corridor initiative, align with the growth of industrial cities and enhancing inter-city connection so that they can compete with top global investment destinations.

Sagarmala Port Development Program

The Sagarmala Program (2015-2035) has identified about 574 projects totaling INR 6.01 trillion in the fields of port modernization and new port development, port connectivity enhancement, port-linked industry, and coastal community development since its inception.

As of September 30, 2019, 121 projects totaling INR 302.28 billion had been completed, with 201 projects totaling INR 3.09 trillion still in the works. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, which are among India’s most popular investment locations, are responsible for the country’s ports and sea connections.

Main transportation corridors are being developed.

The Indian government has approved infrastructure projects of INR 77.25 billion ($1.06 billion) to build greenfield industrial communities with access to important transportation routes such as dedicated freight lanes in the east and west, expressways, national roads, ports, and airports.

This is in line with India’s goal of creating industrial centres all around the country so that it can effectively participate in global supply chains (see map below for industrial hubs expected to benefit from the Production-Linked Incentive schemes).

Pipeline for National Infrastructure

The National Infrastructure Pipeline, or NIP, is a collection of infrastructure projects totaling roughly $1.9 trillion that aim to improve India’s living and business conditions.

The NIP was originally intended for 6,835 projects, but as of this writing, it has grown to include 7,722 projects. According to the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Economic Affairs, there are 1,699 projects in development throughout 34 sub-sectors. Transport, logistics, energy, water and sanitation, communication, social infrastructure, and commercial infrastructure all have NIP investment prospects.

By 2024-25, the NIP goal aims to create India a $5 trillion economy. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pipeline contains economic and social infrastructure projects in key sectors such as energy, highways, urban development, and trains, regardless of the timeline’s viability.
