The Low Altitude Assault Transport/Infantry was a type of LAAT gunship used by the Republic during the Clone Wars. Also known as the Republic Gunship, it was an effective vehicle used for attacking and transporting troops. After the Clone Wars, the few remaining were used for a short period, before they were deactivated or destroyed.
The LAAT made its first appearance in the 2002 Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. It was the second installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
The Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry (LAAT/i), also known as the Republic attack gunship, Republic Gunship or Assault Gunship, was one of the several models in the Low Altitude Assault Transport line of starships that mainly served as gunships and troop transports for the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars.
There were many different variants of the LAAT. First was the standard LAAT gunship, the LAAT/Infantry, and then the LAAT Carrier. Each has its own specialty and capability. Produced by Rothana Heavy Engineering, the LAAT Carrier was a heavy airlift variant of the Grand Army of the Republic’s and had the ability to move the AT-TE in battle-ready position at a moment’s notice.
The Acclamator-class assault ship was used to carry these LAAT into the battlefield and can hold up to 66 infantry gunships and 14 LAAT carriers.
Furthermore, the clone troopers’ full combat amours are with the gunship. Individual troops can receive command signals and relay status update and tactical videos back to the LAAT in real-time.
