পাখির বাসা বানানোর কৌশল ও ধরন নির্ভর করে ওই বিশেষ এলাকার ভৌগোলিক অবস্থান, গঠনগত প্রাকৃতিক বৈচিত্র ও উপাদানের উপরে। পাখিদের মাঝে কেউ কাদা দিয়ে, কেউ ডাল-পালা দিয়ে, কেউ ঘাস, খড়, বিচালি দিয়ে, আবার কেউ নিজের লালা ও গায়ের পালক দিয়ে বাসা বানায়। এসব বাসার গড়নও বিভিন্ন রকমের। কারো বাসা লম্বা চোঙার মতো, কারো বাসা সমতল, কারো বাসা ঝুড়ির মতো, আবার কারো বাসা গোলাকার।
পাখির বাসার দিকে ভালো করে তাকালেই বোঝা যায় যে এরা কত শ্রম, বুদ্ধি, ধৈর্য ও কৌশল খরচ করে একটি বাসা তৈরি করে। পাখিরা তাদের দক্ষতা ও যোগ্যতার সবটুকুই প্রয়োগ করে বাসা তৈরিতে। যাতে বাইরের কোনো বিপদ থেকে নিজেদের রক্ষা করা যায়। জন্তু বা সাপের আক্রমণ থেকে বাঁচার জন্য অনেক পাখি বাসায় ঢোকার রাস্তা তলার দিকে করে। বাইরের আক্রমণকে আটকানোর জন্য তারা একটি পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে। সেটা হলো, অনেক সময় বাসার গায়ে আরও একটি গর্তের মতো মুখ তৈরি করে রাখে। সেটা কেবল ঠকানোর জন্য। তার ভেতর দিয়ে বাসার মধ্যে ঢোকা যায় না। তাহলে চলুন দেখে আসি পরিচিত কিছু পাখির বাসা-
