Trucking is becoming increasingly futuristic. In the United States, there are now 4 million trucks in use, and they transport around 70% of the country’s freight. Despite the 2008 financial crisis, when demand plummeted, the commercial vehicle market in the United States has seen stable growth. Commercial cars in the United States increased from 5 million to 8.5 million units in 2018, thanks to the tremendous expansion of E-Commerce companies like Amazon and Walmart, and are expected to continue to rise in the United States and around the world. With a slew of transportation and logistics startups springing up around the world with companies like Amazon offering “Same Day Delivery,” the demand for fuel-efficient commercial vehicles is only expected to rise in the coming decade. It appears that the trucking industry is ripe for disruption, and Elon Musk is poised to do just that.
