Just a few decades ago, the UAE was a quiet desert country with a handful of sleepy fishing villages and other small settlements. But thanks to its oil reserves it began to develop at a dramatic pace. And now as a business, financial, and transportation hub, the UAE’s population centers like Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become cosmopolitan metropolises where the majority of the people are foreign residents. The result is a country that is both Arabian and international, and sometimes seems both quirky and futuristic because of its taste for striking and superlative architecture.
Even though the UAE’s establishment as a country and its development is quite recent, the area was a British quasi-protectorate called “The Trucial States” for around 150 years. And of course its history goes back much further than that. Despite the area’s historically sparse population, it has always been strategically important for its location on the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.
