Shock news: SpaceX is ending production of the Crew Dragon spacecraft
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has just revealed that the company will stop producing Crew Dragon spacecraft.
Remember the heady days of last week, when SpaceX unveiled the name of its latest Crew Dragon spacecraft?
So now, why?
How will Nasa astronauts go to the ISS?
What’s their secret plan?
Let’s find out:
Earlier this week, SpaceX announced that it will no longer build new vehicles of its Crew Dragon capsule, the spacecraft the company uses to take humans to and from the International Space Station.
The plan, for now, is to cap the Crew Dragon fleet for carrying humans at four, which SpaceX will re-fly, again and again, to get crews to space.
This means that SpaceX’s fourth Crew Dragon, Freedom, is currently finishing production ahead of the Crew-4 launch and is probably going to be the last of the iconic spacecraft ever made.
“We are finishing our final (capsule), but we still are manufacturing components, because we’ll be refurbishing” SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said, confirming the plan to end Crew Dragon manufacturing.
She added that SpaceX would retain the capability to build more capsules if a need arises in the future, but contended that “fleet management is key.”
Thanks to Crew Dragon, SpaceX has a monopoly on human spaceflight to the ISS. While Boeing was also awarded a CCtCap contract from NASA, its proposed crewed spacecraft, Starliner, has been beset by technical delays that have halted even a test flight.
NASA has given SpaceX some $3.5 billion to help develop and subsequently use Crew Dragon for six flights to the space station.
SpaceX has flown four crews of astronauts to the space station under its NASA contract at roughly $255 million per flight. The company carried out a fully private mission last year with four passengers, including a billionaire entrepreneur who funded the flight, for a three-day trip in Earth orbit.
Moreover, the company has plenty of future trips planned for the four Crew Dragons, each of which has been named by their first astronaut crews: Endeavour, Resilience, Endurance, and Freedom.
In February, NASA awarded SpaceX three additional human missions with Crew Dragon to the ISS, on top of the six SpaceX was originally contracted to do. The news brought SpaceX’s Commercial Crew contract award with NASA to $3.49 billion.
Besides, at least four more private astronaut missions on Crew Dragon are planned with Houston-based space station builder and spaceflight manager Axiom Space, with the first so-called Ax-1 mission scheduled for April carrying four entrepreneurs to the space station to conduct scientific research.
