The MTS bus was northbound on 14th St. when a male passenger started for unknown reasons to attack a female passenger. Other passengers went to the females’ defense and the altercation turned more violent.
When officers arrived, they found the male suspect was down and not breathing. Officers and firefighters started to give life-saving measures and the male was transported to a local hospital. The male was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The passengers are being questioned as the SDPD Homicide Detectives have taken over the investigation.

San Diego – On April 30, 2022, at 8:08 p.m., the San Diego Police Communications Center
received a call from MTS reporting a violent disturbance occurring on a bus in the area of
1400 F Street in Downtown San Diego.
Officers from Central Division located the bus just north of F Street on 14th Street and found
an unresponsive male lying on the floor of the bus. Officers called for medics and
performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. The male was transported to a
nearby hospital where, unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at 9:23 p.m. The
deceased male has been identified, however, his name is not being released at this time
pending family notifications. He is described as a 28-year-old Black male.
San Diego Police Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and are currently
investigating the incident. It is early in the investigation and detectives are still in the
process of interviewing passengers on the bus and collecting evidence. However,
detectives have learned the male victim in this incident became involved in an altercation
with a female passenger on the bus.
A male passenger, later identified as Edward Hilbert, witnessed this altercation. Hilbert physically intervened and restrained the victim for several minutes. While being restrained by Hilbert, the victim lost consciousness, went
into medical distress, and ultimately died. Detectives arrested Edward Hilbert, 55, and he was booked into County jail for one count of murder.
