Volkswagen increases its electric vehicle production capacity to shorten lead times for new models.
The VW ID4 is now produced in four plants, with a fifth set to start production before the end of the year.
Emden joins the Chinese plants in Anting and Foshan as Germany’s second EV production facility after Zwickau. This year, Chattanooga USA and Hanover will begin production.
“A critical component of our Accelerate strategy is a rapid increase of manufacturing capacity for our successful ID4 model.” It enables us to expedite the transition to zero-carbon mobility while also expanding our capacity to fulfill the increasing demand for electric vehicles,” stated Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter. “Through our unwavering commitment to the site, we hope to demonstrate that cost-effectiveness and competitiveness are attainable in the region and can also be sustained.”
In February, Volkswagen was obliged to eliminate all but one Variant of its ID3 electric car to reduce lead times.
Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Deiss has warned that a scarcity of Ukrainian-made components could be the company’s most significant supply challenge in 2022.
After Russia’s invasion, the German carmaker paused production at two EV plants in Germany, affecting VW, Audi, and Cupra manufacturing. At the same time, Skoda cut the output of its Enyaq EV at its Czech factory.
VW intends to produce 1.2 million electric vehicles per year due to its new production capacity.
In addition to the ID4, Emden will release the AERO B next year. Furthermore, ID Buzz production will begin at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover this year. It will be joined by the ID3 from Wolfsburg starting in 2023, and a third electric car, the Trinity, will begin rolling off the assembly line in 2026.
The ID4 has swiftly become VW’s best-selling electric vehicle since its debut in early 2021. Volkswagen delivered over 30,000 units in the first quarter of 2022 alone, making the ID4 one of every two all-electric Volkswagen vehicles. Since its launch, 163,000 units have been delivered, and around 73,000 orders for the model have been placed worldwide.
Volkswagen will reveal the ID 4 saloon as a slick technological demonstration to steal sales from the most popular electric cars. Still, it will also unveil a compact urban EV for approximately 17,000 euros at the opposite end of the line-up.
The quirky ID Life concept from last year’s Munich motor show gave a hint of what to expect from Volkswagen’s most affordable EV. Still, a new preview image suggests the design team has gone back to the drawing board to give the production version a more robust visual link to the Volkswagen ID 4 saloon, which will go on sale around the same time.
Volkswagen designers were reportedly looking to give the production version of the ID Life a more futuristic style and emphasize its digital features to attract younger buyers earlier this year.
The drawing depicts a leaner, more muscular form, with an angular front end and signature ID cues like the horizontal front light bar, solidifying its place in the growing ID family.
Unlike the ID 4 saloon, the new Polo-sized EV – which is believed to be dubbed the ID 1 – will be built on a modified version of the ID 3’s platform known as MEB Entry, which is about 100 millimeters shorter.
It will also be equipped with the same 231 horsepower front-mounted motor and 57-kilowatt-hour battery as the prototype, giving it a range of over 250 miles and a 0-62 mph pace of fewer than seven seconds.
