The Chinese government plans to have a reusable first stage on its next-generation crew launch vehicle for missions to the moon and the space station. As a result of the new rocket, China will now have a reusable launch option for sending astronauts or cargo to Tiangong, while an even larger version will enable China to send astronauts on lunar or deep space missions.
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the country’s main space contractor, says it can also carry a much larger spacecraft than Shenzhou, which is currently used by the China National Space Administration. After completing its launch mission, the first stage will restart its engines to help it decelerate, using grid fins for guidance, similar to the pioneering Falcon 9 rocket flown by #SpaceX #ElonMusk.
During the landing phase, however, “tethered devices” will be used. Rather than landing legs, the descending rocket stage will carry hooks that will be attached to tightwires to make them catch. CASC did not reveal when the space rocket will be ready, but China’s recently released space white paper outlined key tasks for the next five years (2021-2025), one of which is the launch of the rocket that will carry the crew to orbit. Currently, China launches crewed missions with the expendable Long March 2F rocket, which uses toxic and therefore hazardous and expensive hypergolic propellant.
