Science fiction knows many faces, none of which are taken seriously by the larger literary world. Yet sci-fi’s speculative elements generate a peculiar strand of theorizing that is unequaled by many other forms of fiction.
Martijn Loos maintains that the genre not only influences the way we think, but also what we are able to think, and therefore has a claim in what we should think. As such, He defends sci-fi’s liberatory potential and will show you why you should embrace your inner nerd.
Martijn Loos is a young academic currently employed as teaching assistant at the University College Tilburg. He holds a RMA in Comparative Literary Sciences from Utrecht University and is interested in the intersection of continental philosophy and speculative fiction.

A ‘last lecture’ is a lecture in which a professor lectures to a group of students as if it was their last lecture. The professor answers questions like ‘What would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance? or ‘If this were your last time to address a group of students, what would you say?
The event is inspired by the last lecture given by Professor Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University upon his diagnosis with terminal cancer. In his wonderful speech ‘Achieving Your Childhood Dreams’ Pausch alternated between insights on his academic field, valuable encounters he made in life, personal choices and experiences, inspirational life lessons, and important events that guided him on his path of life.
