Clean water and sanitation is Goal No. 6 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, a goal that Jack Sim, founder of World Toilet Organisation has revolutionised. Time Magazine named Mr. Sim as one of the ‘Heroes of the Environment’ in 2008, his work pushing for sanitation and public health policies with the help of the organisations he set up. Through the World Toilet Organisation, he has built a network of governments, UN agencies, academics and other stakeholders to work for better sanitation policies around the world, even opening India’s first World Toilet College. Mr. Toilet is a nickname he has gained and also has a documentary with the same title.
In conversation with Alexis Group host, Mr. Kunal Mandal, he talks about the importance of toilets as the very fundamentals of health, prosperity and even economic well being. He swears by the use of humour to draw attention to sanitation and toilets. He envisions futuristic toilets to be able to perform tasks such as simple diagnoses, that you otherwise had to go to the hospital for. The discussion touches various aspects of public health policy, the Covid-19 pandemic and the future of sanitation and hygiene around the world.
