Ford’s Eluminator crate motor is designed to make EV conversions easy
As batteries and other EV components steadily become cheaper and more capable, conversions of legacy gas vehicles, especially beloved classics, are becoming more attractive. Now Ford has announced an electric crate motor designed to make EV conversions easy.
Ford teased a couple of renderings of the new Eluminator, which will be unveiled at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this fall. The name is a play on the Aluminator name that Ford has used for V8 crate engines in the past.
Motor Authority predicts that the Eluminator will cater to EV builders with a sense of brand loyalty—for example, tinkerers have long used Ford’s current crate gas engines to keep their souped-up Mustang or Deuce Coupe projects all-Ford.
A couple of aftermarket companies sell electric crate motors—check out California-based Electric GT’s V8-style motor, and EV West’s Tesla crate motor kit. In 2020, Chevrolet unveiled an electric crate motor that it said would be available to customers in the second half of 2021.
