The world needs more power; hopefully, it will come in a form that is clean and renewable. Because of the rapid advancement in the world, new battery technologies are totally coming our way. At the present, energy-storage batteries are shaped by lithium-ion batteries. But more than that, what can we still look forward to in the years that will come?
First things first, let’s have some battery basics. A battery is defined as a pack of one or more cells, each of which has a positive electrode (the cathode), a negative electrode (the anode), a separator, and an electrolyte. Using different chemicals and materials for these affects the properties of the battery – how much energy it can store and output, how much power it can provide, or the number of times it can be discharged and recharged (also called cycling capacity).
Battery technology can play a vital role in the energy transition. It is known to facilitate the decarbonization transportation sector and at the same time providing a critical backstop for intermittent solar and wind generation in power generation. However, some had said that the widely used lithium-ion battery may not be up to the task of carrying the future of the global green economy.
According to reports, US President Joe Biden is actually making batteries as part of his carbon-neutrality strategy. In this plan, the suggestion is that domestic production could create jobs as compared to relying on Chinese and Korean imports. Currently, Chinese companies, including CATL, BYD, and Hefei Guoxuan High-Tech, produce 79% of the world’s batteries.
As mentioned a while ago, lithium-ion, also known as Li-ion, is the most productive battery technology in use today. It boasts high energy density relative to older nickel-cadmium batteries, and the absence of a memory effect, which causes batteries to lose storage capacity with continued usage.
