SHOCKING facts about ADDIS ABABA , the largest city in HORN OF AFRICA

1. Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and also the largest city in not only Ethiopia, but also the Horn of Africa. As of 2021, the city’s population is estimated at 5,006,000 inhabitants. Addis Ababa is also the capital of the Oromia region.
2. At an elevation of 7726 feet above sea level, Addis Ababa is the highest capital city in Africa. This gives the city a pleasantly cool and temperate climate. Though it can get chilly sometimes. This makes Addis Ababa, along with Nairobi, the coldest capital city in Sub-Sahara Africa.
3. The city was founded in 1887 by Emperor Menelik 2 and was named Addis Ababa which means New Flower.
4. Addis Ababa is a grassland biome and by 1905 there was a serious scarcity of firewood due to population increase. This prompted the importation of a large number of eucalyptus trees from Australia. The trees spread and today, there is large forest cover in and around the city.
5. Addis Ababa is the economic and educational center of Ethiopia with a large number of manufacturing, service-based and educational institutions. The rapid pace of Ethiopia’s economic growth has had the biggest impact on Addis Ababa and this is evidenced by the many impressive skyscrapers that give the city a modern skyline.
6. Addis Ababa boasts of modern transport facilities like the light rail transportation system, which is one of a first in Sub- Sahara Africa. It is also served by a modern Airport, one of the best looking ones by the way and a very highly regarded and award winning Airline. Ethiopia Airways has rightfully gotten the reputation of being one of the most reliable and fastest growing airlines in Africa.
7. Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Unions headquarters. It is therefore thought to be the political capital of Africa because of its political, diplomatic and historical significance for the continent.
