Panel: Climate-Driven Coastal Hazards for California
2021 Tribal EPA Region 9 Conference
October 21, 2021

Abstract
Over 26 million people living in California coastal counties will be directly or indirectly affected by sea-level rise and associated coastal climate hazards. With five feet of sea-level rise, more than half of California’s iconic beaches, rocky intertidal habitat, marshes, and tidal flats are at risk from inundation alone. And these potential impacts do not account for coastal erosion, flooding during extreme events, or rising groundwater hazards. Here we present a comprehensive modeling approach that has been developed to address all these hazards, the Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS), and translate those hazards into socioeconomic exposure. Understanding potential exposure to multiple coastal climate hazards allows communities to better prioritize and develop more strategic adaptation solutions. The United States Geological Survey and Point Blue Conservation Science have been working together with a wide range of stakeholders for over a decade to develop state-of-the-science climate-driven coastal hazards approaches and products, and to deliver these products via user-friendly decision-support tools that directly meet the climate planning needs of agencies across California. We will summarize the modeling approach and provide a tutorial for how to access this publicly-available information to support local planning for climate hazards.

Speakers
Patrick Barnard, USGS
Maya Hayden, Point Blue Conservation Science
