So recently, I was scrolling through my highlights from this year’s model railroad show, and then I noticed some photos and videos I didn’t include in my Day 1 highlights, largely due to problems with KineMaster and iMovie for the iMac. So after trying iMovie on mobile, I decided to showcase them at a later date. It’s a bit late, but better that than never I suppose. That being said, I hope you enjoy
0:00 Intro
0:03 A Norfolk Southern coal train rounds the bend, led by a trio of GE Evolution Series locos (one of them being a Tier 4).
0:47 In a current day scene, two BNSF trains meet each other. One train has a C44-9W from the Portland Western on it, and the other is led by a rather neat looking lashup (H2 GP60M, H2 SD70MAC, H1 “Pumpkin” C44-9W, and another one in ATSF paint)
2:03 2 heritage units together. NS #8099 “Southern”, and NS #8104 “Lehigh Valley”. N&W class A #1218 makes a cameo to top it all off. Interestingly enough, this engine is the only 2-6-6-4 articulated steam engine to be preserved, currently displayed at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. She also served the NS steam program in excursion service between 1987-1991.
2:12 Another shot of UP Big Boy #4020 pulling a produce train, while a Penn Central freight train passes on the other line. While I was taping this, something went wrong, as the train suddenly stopped. Not sure what it was, but I suppose there was a train separation or a derailment or something.
2:44 In a mid-70s Chicago scene, a C&NW commuter train stops to exchange passengers, while an early Metra consist, led by a C&NW-painted F40PH, sits nearby.
2:50 A rather interesting gathering of engines at the roundhouse, including what appears to be a partially-dismantled C&NW F unit, presumably under repair.
2:54 The same Heritage Units and their train from earlier swing around the bend (with idled AC44C6M #4000 and UP ES44AC #2010 nearby), only to suddenly break loose in the process. While the engines are reattached to their train, a Kansas City Southern oil train comes flying past.
4:19 A C&O freight train comes through town, led by an inaccurate K4-class 2-8-4 #2787 (misleadingly says #2687), passing a Kansas City Southern freight train, led by an inaccurate GE of some sorts.
4:37 In a classic steam era scene, two UP Big Boys, numbered #4014 and #4013, doublehead a long freight train through a short tunnel. The 4014 is one of 8 Big Boys that remain today, and now serves the UP well in excursion service since her restoration in 2019.
5:23 One of Siemen’s new Chargers, numbered #301, leads an Amtrak passenger train in what is essentially a futuristic-looking Amtrak scene. These new, cleaner diesels will be replacing the veteran GE Genesis that has served Amtrak since the early 1990s.
5:47 In another classic scene from the steam era, a Milwaukee Road 2-8-2 leads a local freight through the station.
6:03 Standing before a portrait of a model railroad enthusiast, an SP “Warbaby” GS-4 #4445 sits proudly with her train. Unfortunately, she was scrapped during the mid-late 1950s when the Southern Pacific transitioned to diesel, with the except of famous sister engine #4449, who is still a beloved steam excursion star.
6:07 In a classic Wisconsin Central scene, we see a freight train (with an F45 and an F unit in the consist) passes a second, albeit stationary freight, led by what appears to be some ALCOs in the lead.
6:44 A little poster advertising the Illinois Railway Museum in Union IL, one of the largest, and most popular railroad museums in the US.
