Inside a single-wheel Hoverboard

Hoverboard Technologies has devised a product by the same name that lets a rider float along while balancing on a single wheel. In this short video, Design World executive editor Lee Teschler talks to inventor Robert Bigler who describes the special 5-kW servomotor that he developed to make the vehicle possible. Bigler also elaborates on some of the Hoverboard’s advanced features such as ground-contacting sonar that lets it anticipate bumps and changing slopes to help give a more stable ride.
